Haines
High School has a population of 100 students in grades
9-12 and employs 12 full and part-time faculty. There
is a K-12 principal and an assistant principal who manage
the K-12 school.
Students consistently score above the national average on standardized tests. Annually, approximately 75% of our graduates pursue higher education and an average of less than 10% drop out of school. The curriculum includes electives in fine arts, math, science, trade and technical education, physical education, home economics, and foreign language.
Students must earn 24 credits to graduate, including 4 credits of English, 3.5 credits of social studies, 4 credits of math, 3 credits of science and 2 credits of health and physical education. In addition, students must have .5 credit of computer class. The physical plant consists of two buildings: the vocational shop and the main building. The vocational shop houses the art room and a shop for automotive mechanics, metals, drafting, and small engines classes. The main building houses eight classrooms, wood shop, media center, computer lab, guidance and a counseling center, high school office, a gymnasium, and swimming pool. The Haines Elementary/Middle School has an enrollment of 175 students housed in two nearly adjacent buildings. The student population, of which approximately 20% is Alaska Native and another 15% is transient, is divided into class by grade. In addition to the 20 classroom teachers, there are certified staff members in special education, physical education, vocal and instrumental music, art, counseling, and computers. The is one full-time secretary and 3 full and part-time aides. Other programs operated through grants include Title I, Migrant Education, Indian Education, Bilingual Education, and Johnson O'Malley. The teacher workday is from 8 am to 4 pm with a half hour duty-free lunch. Students are present from approximately 8:30 am until 3:10 pm, depending on their grade level. Mosquito
Lake School:

District also operates the Mosquito
Lake Elementary School, a remote K-8 school 27 miles
from the City Center at Mosquito Lake. This school has an
enrollment of 14 students and has one full-time teacher
and two para-professionals. Specialists from the town school
visit periodically to offer special classes in art and music.
